I spent part of the weekend listening closely to the new Giles Martin remix of The Beatles last album “Abbey Road”. There are some things to like about it, but two things jumped out immediately: it is a bit cleaner, and it is much more compressed than his dad’s original mix, thus the dynamic range has been leveled out.

Is it a better version? No. Is it a different version? Yes. Should I buy it? If you’re a Beatles fan you probably already have. If you’re buying your first copy of ‘Abbey Road’, I’d stick with the original 1969 George Martin mix. I will say the outtakes are interesting. Beatles outtakes are generally more interesting than most other artist’s finished products.
